iii iiiiiiiiuiuiii • ~.
1983 RECLAMATION REVIEv7

Genstar Building Materials Company; Coaldaie Quarry
Numerous changes were made this year in the reclamation CGechniques. ~ .,'.,~Jre?s
Foremost of these changes vas an intensified planting program during
the first two weeks of June. A crew of four students from Colorado
Mountain College planted 818 shrubs, seeded and mulched areas within
the reclamation sites. This alloyed more time this summer for care
of the new seedlings and to mulch extensive areas of the sites.
This was also the fir y~ears'inlcn~978, that tree seedlings were
obtained from the orest Service rather than from an
independent supplier. These seedlings were hardier than those re-
ceived in previous years.
These changes have improved seedling hardiness and should result in
less winter die off than occured in previous years. The mulching also
greatly improved moisture retention and thus seed germination. This
will lead to an improved grass stand in subsequent years.
Site A
Site Descriptions
(Refer to map for site locations)
This is a high terraced area covering approximately 3.5 acres, it is
a U shaped site with northwest, east and northeast aspects.
Most of the site was revegetated in 1982 with only the red areas (refer
to map) being totally planted this year. Fill in planting was done
where die off occured in the 1982 areas.
The site was built up of mine spoils except for a small area on the top
where topsoil was hauled in. Due to improved mining techniques this
site is much lower in gypsum content than are the older sites and provides
a better planting medium.
Vegetation here is the best of all the quarry sites. There is an excell-
ent stand of yellow sweetclover as yell as good grass coverage consisting
of western wheatgrass and crested wheatgrass.
There are 5 species of shrubs
saltbush and fringed sage are
have grown 12 inches during t
old plants are 30 inches tall
The fourwing and fringed sage
very promising.
planted on the site of which the fourwing
the most outstanding. Some of the fourwing
pis, their first summer, and some of the year
and 36 inches in diameter at the crown.
are also setting seed this year and this is
The most prominent tree species is juniper but the ponderosa pine and pinon
pine are also doing well.
~t/~ g~ , ~
tj
