Therefore. Salt Creek is only modifying the means by which the <br />water is discharged and no significant harm is being done to the <br />local hydrologic regime. If coal production at the mine resumes <br />during the next year the only chance to the effect upon the <br />aquifer will be an increase in the quantity of water that is <br />discharged from the mine. Salt creek will use some of the water <br />generated at the mine but compared to the total available water in <br />the East Salt Creek regime the effect will be insignificant. <br />Additionally. since there are no known water rights adjudicated <br />for this aquifer, there is little chance that water interests are <br />being injured. <br />HUNGER CANYON M[NE <br />To date there has been no water encountered by this mine: <br />therefore. there has been no effect on the hydrologic regime of <br />the area. Table 2 documents that there has been no water used at <br />Munger. Since there has been no mining at either mine the mine <br />workings mans included in the last submittal are still correct and <br />should be retained. <br />EFFECT OF THE MINES ON THE EAST SALT CREEK REGIME <br />Surface Water <br />Due to the limited disturbance of the mines there is little chance <br />tnat any significant effect on the quantity or quality of the <br />surface waters near either mine sites has occurred. As the <br />Division notes in its approval package for the Munger Canyon Mine. <br />the total area tYiat will be disturbed by both mine sites amounts <br />to 0.12 percent of the area of the East Salt Creek drainage bas(n <br />above the mines. <br />Surface water samples are only being taken at one location on both <br />McClane Creek (SW-2) and Munger Creek (SW-3), because Salt Creek <br />has been allowed to alter the approved monitoring program. The <br />alteration was requested in March of L984 because there was little <br />activity at the mines and reduced sampling was adequate to <br />determine the effects of mining on the environment. <br />Results of the quarterly sampling for each monitoring site are <br />shown on Table 2. The results of water sampling at SW-3 in Munger <br />Creek are highly variable as was the case with the baseline data. <br />Although sample site SW-2 was Checked numerous times during the <br />reporting period, no flow was realized. It should be noted that <br />most of the time sampling was attempted during rainstorms. The <br />nature of the McClane Canyon is that it takes an intense storm to <br />cause the creek to run. Many timed these events occur late at <br />night or at other times when employees are not Present. <br />Hopefully. the proposed relocation of the Salt Creek offices to <br />the McClane Canyon Mine will allow better monitoring of flow <br />conditions in the creek. <br />Page - 3 ll/16/88 <br />
