assessment of the color and intensity variations possible using the stain. It was noted that the
color can range from near black or dark brown at high concentrations to a light greenish-tan
when using low concentrations.
A second stain test was done by spraying from a "cherry picker" on about 5000 square
feet. Due to cool conditions, the color did not develop well. The Colorado Department of
Transportation reported that when staining under those conditions, the color does not develop
until the next summer when the temperatures rise and ultraviolet radiation increases. This
information is based on their experiences in the Glenwood Canyon project on Interstate 70. So
far, the area has darkened slightly, but it has been too cool, wet, and cloudy to bring about the
full reaction.
Meetings were also held with the Colorado Department of Transportation and the U.S.
Army to brainstorm ideas for staining the rest of the benched north end of the quarry. It is a
complex problem. This summer plans are in place to stain an acre or more of the quarry.
Seeding of Final Sediment Basin area:
Seeding Mixtures
Species Rate (N PLS/acre)
Intermediate Wheatgrass 10
Pubescent Wheatgrass 10
Smooth Brome 10
Ranger Alfalfa 1
Seeding of First Bench at crest of Area MV:
Species Rate (ff PLS/acre)
Blue Grama 0.5
Crested Wheatgrass (Fairway) 1
Green Needlegrass 1.5
(not seeded as not available)
Intermediate Wheatgrass 4
Little Bluestem 2
Pubescent Wheatgrass 4
Russian Wildrye 2
Sideoats Grama 2.5
Western Wheatgrass 3.5
Ranger Alfalfa 1
1995 Annual Report
Pikeview Quarry M-77-211
May 27, 1995
