Additional Sheet
Pikeview Quarry Annual Report
May 27, 1995
Base Reclamation
First Bench -top of Area MV: On the extreme western edge of Area MV (see map) a first
bench was cut into the granite near the permit boundary. This bench, after being cut, was
graded, backfilled, topsoiled to about 8 inches thick, and seeded. Trees were also to be
planted, but with heavy spring rains the site became inaccessible and the planting could not be
done. The trees are in storage and will be planted in the fall.
Topsoil from this area was stored down the slope and southeast of the mining area. The
remaining soil will be used on subsequent benches.
Concern has been expressed by the public that as a result of this mining the quarry is
getting larger. The recent amendment pointed out that some expansion will occur, but the
media, in describing the amendment, only talked about the land removed from the mining plan.
As a result, the public has an erroneous concept of the plan.
Although this mining appears to be an expansion, it is actually the first step in
removing a ridge that extends from this point southeastward. The west side of the valley
behind the ridge is being protected from disturbance, but currently this slope is not visible.
Once the ridge is removed the view will expose the undisturbed slope and, in fact, the quarry
will appear to become slightly smaller.
Backfi[ling in Area RN: Backfilling with waste in Area RN is continuing at a slow pace, but
the final shape of this area is starting to become evident. The area is not ready for topsoiling
yet, but may be finished in the next year.
Sediment and Stormwater Controls: During the winter the final stormwater sediment basin
(located at the east boundary of the permit) was completed. When the heavy spring rains came
the pond went into action and worked admirably. Water leaving the outlet was clean and
sediment was removed by the pond.
The outlet of the pond, unfortunately, still needs some rip rap placed and this will be
done as soon as the ground dries out enough to access the outlet.
Seeding of the dam and surrounding disturbances was done in winter. The germination
rate is excellent and with such a wet spring should produce strong growths, perhaps by the end
of the 1995 summer.
1995 Annual Report Pikeview Quarry M-77-211 May 27, 1995
