October 2000 -45-

003-2191
where S =drain spacing
k = hydraulic conductivity of the soil and trash is estimated to be 10-z cm/sec = 30
ft/day
Q = design flow to the drain = 887/1500 = 0.59 ftflow/day/ foot of drain, drain
length for 21 acres = 1500'
D = depth of flow layer beneath the drains =1 foot max
H = height of potential leachate above the plane through the drains and midway
between two drains = 1 foot
h = height ofwaterlevelin the drain = 4-inch pipe = .3 feet
Using this formula the necessary drain spacing is over 398 feet. For the design of the
depository, the drain spacing will be set at approximately 150 feet. The pipe will be
covered with 6" of gravel and wrapped in a geotextile (see Dtawing 6).
The sumps will be a 18" diameter pipe set on the south end of the pit. Two temporary
sumps will be built at the mid-point and westem end of Phase I as shown in Drawing 3
as the facility is expanded to the west. The drains will connect into a central drain that
will mn east to west and bisect the facility. This central drain will flow to the sumps.
The leachate collection system for the west portion of the depository operation will be
installed in the second phase of the operation.
In order to determine if the sump is intersecting all of the leachate, three shallow wells
will be constructed down gradient of the permanent sump. If it is determined that the
drain system and sump aze not collecting all of the leachate, then appropriate action will
betaken.
3.2.6 Surface Water Control Systems
The surface water control system was designed to retain the flow from the facility at its
different stages. The system was designed for a peak discharge from a 100-yeaz storm.
• Perimeter ditches aze used to convey the stormwater to retention ponds on the westem
uoorzro~rsieis.mu,re~~iiooo eon Sedalia Recycling Center and Depository
