II. GROUND WATER

The following general trends were indicated by analysis of data presented for
Wadge overburden bedrock ground water wells 087742, 087758 and 089906.
1, The concentrations for constituents in all three wells were within
historic limits;
2, None of the concentrations for the constituents in the wells
exceeded irrigation standards;
3, The Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) concentrations for each well was
slightly less than the respective historic average;
4, The chemistry of major ions in the water indicates that more
soluble ions (Na, HC03) are being leached from the system and are
being replaced with less soluble ions (Ca, Mg, and S04); and
5, The detection limit for cadmium was larger than the MLRD material
damage standard.
Information recorded from Wadge overburden monitoring wells 087742, 087758 and
087906 indicates that the constituents in the ground water are within historic
ranges for each well. Changes in water chemistry in 087742 and 087758
indicate leaching of sodium and bicarbonate from the system. Calcium,
magnesium and sulfate are becoming the predominant ions in the ground water
system. The TDS concentrations for all three wells were slightly below the
historical averages.
The change in water chemistry in the wells indicates that more soluble Na+
and NCO ions are being replaced by less soluble Ca++~ Mg++ and
SO]~2 ions as the dominant ions (Figure 1, 2, and 3).
Analysis of data from 087758 and 087906 indicates recovery in each of these
wells of approximately 1.75 feet/year since 1980-81. No significant change in
the ground water level in 087742 has occurred. Well 087742 may be isolated
from water level fluctuations in the other wells by a fault zone located
between well 087742 and the other wells.
CYCC has not consistently achieved a detection limit for cadmium that is equal
to or less than the material damage criteria limit The detection limit that
CYCC often achieves is 20 micrograms/1, while the material damage criteria is
10 micrograms/1.
The Division was unable to determine the recharge and baseflow mechanism of
Foidel Creek. No conc]usions regarding the mechanism could be determined due
to incomplete data collection during the irrigation season and the lack of a
stream elevation record. The incomplete data record was due to destruction of
several of the wells. CYCC has installed a stream elevation recorder and will
continue to monitor wells AV-1 and AV-2 during the 1987 irrigation season. A
complete data record will allow analysis of the recharge/baseflow mechanism
for Foidel Creek.
