Stations 1+35 through 3+00 consisted of massive granitic gneiss. The foliation strike <br />ranges from 240 to 250 degrees and dips range from 15 to 25 degrees parallel to the <br />highwall, with average spacing of 18 inches and slightly rough, wavy apertures open up to <br />'/a inch. The primary joint set strike ranges from 25 to 35 degrees and generally dips from <br />70 to 80 degrees. A secondaryjoint set is evident in this area and exhibits a strike of 100 <br />to 110 degrees with dips of 60 to 70 degrees. The spacing of both the joint sets averaged <br />18 inches and exhibited closed, slightly smooth to slightly rough faces. From <br />approximately station 1+OS to 1+35, the exposure of this unit underlies the highly <br />weathered biotite gneiss. Observations of this interface indicate the massive gneiss is <br />likely to provide a natural bench under the highly weathered material which should aid in <br />catching raveling material. <br />The upper highwall scanline was approximately 450 feet long and was separated into 3 discrete <br />sections. <br />Stations 0+00 through 2+00 consisted of massive granitic gneiss displaying an anticlinal <br />trend. The strike of the foliation ranges from 190 to 295 degrees due to this anticlinal trend. <br />Foliation to dips range from 55 degrees southwest at station 0+00 to horizontal at <br />approximately station 1+00 and back to 35 degrees southeast at station 2+00. The dips to <br />the west of the anticlinal apex are slightly out of the highwall while the dips to the east of <br />the apex are slightly into the highwall. The there was only one joint set visible in this <br />section and the strike ranges from 20 to 30 degrees and generally dips from 70 to 80 <br />degrees. The joints average a spacing of 15 inches and exhibit closed, slightly smooth <br />faces. <br />Stations 2+00 through 3+00 consisted of massive granitic gneiss. The foliation has strikes <br />ranging from I90 to 200 degrees and shallow dips ranging between 10 and ZO degrees with <br />an average spacing of 24 inches and closed, slightly rough, wavy faces. The foliation dips <br />slightly into the highwall. The primary joint set strike ranges from 325 to 335 degrees and <br />generally dips from 60 to 70 degrees. A secondary joint set is evident in this area and <br />exhibits a strike of 65 to 75 degrees with a dips of 80 degrees to near vertical, The spacing <br />of joint set 1 ranges from 6 inches to over three feet with slightly smooth closed apertures <br />while the spacing of joint set two averaged 4 feet with closed and rough apertures. <br />Stations 3+00 to 4+50 consisted of disintegrated biotite gneiss. Joint and foliation <br />characteristics were indistinct throughout this zone. The rock displays only slight <br />weathering and little to no iron staining, thus this section is inferred to be disintegrated due <br />to localized shear. Observations of material at the base of the slope indicate predominantly <br />smaller material raveling from the highwall and this smaller material is anticipated to cause <br />only minor safety hazards or local operational delays. <br />Figures 3, 4 and 5 aze a photo documentary of the features observed in the lower and upper <br />highwalls respectively. <br />4.0 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION <br />Observations of the Central Quany indicate little change in the Finished slopes, Local rock <br />sloughing was observed and was classified as minor based on rock accumulations observed on <br />bench surfaces throughout the Central Quarry.
