FIGURE N0. 1 <br />Basis For Discharge Calculations <br />STREAM DISCHARGE RATE <br />The following equation will yield the rate of flow in a stream <br />when applied to the float method of measurement: <br />wdal <br />r = t <br />r = rate of flow in cubic feet per second <br />w = average width of channel tested in feet <br />d = average depth in feet <br />a = constant, depends upon the nature of the bottom: <br />a = 0.8 Rough (loose rocks and gravel) <br />a = 0.9 Smooth (mud, sand or bedrock) <br />• 1 = length in feet of channel section tested <br />t = average time (three (3) tests) in seconds required for <br />float to traverse channel section. <br />• <br />
