YEOETATION MAPPING UNITS <br />• Ponderosa Pine Woodland <br />THis mapping unit is dominated by ponderosa pine (Pious oonderosa)which provides from about <br />30 to 100 percent canopy corer. The understory is variously comprised of native grosses end <br />shrubs. The mapping unit grades into Mountain Mahogany Shrubland, end, thus may have <br />extensive dense mountain mahogany (Ceracerous montenus)shrub understory. <br />Skunkbrush. American Plum. Chokecherry Shrubland <br />I n these ereos, deep colluviel deposits support thickets of skunkbrush (Rhus irilobete), <br />American plum (Prunus emertcena), end Chokecherry (Prunus vtrainiana var. melenoceroe). <br />Occasional squaw currant (Ribes cereum) end even stunted heckberry (Celtis occidenialis) may <br />be found in these thickets. TheAmericen plum end chokecherry do not achieve their typical <br />heights, staying mostly below one meter. <br />Rioerian Shrubs end Sma11 Trees <br />Ocurring in narrow strips along a few sheltered drainages ere developments of mesic shrubs <br />includingRmerican plum end chokecherry as well es willows (Selix sp.) end hawthorns <br />• (Crateeaus sp.) that reach heights of a few meters. A few tree species including boxelder (Ater <br />undo), cottonwood (Pooulus delioides and P. x acuminate), and peachleaf willow (Boltz <br />amvadeloides) occur sporadically. <br />Dense Mountain Mehooanv Shrubland <br />This extensive mapping unit is distinguished by the heavy cover of mountain mahogany. In some <br />parts,there are scattered ponderosa pine. <br />Grassland with Scattered Mountain Mahooanv <br />This grassland unit is characterized by the occasional occurrence of mountain mahogany shrubs. <br />The gross metr ix is dominated by a mixture of cool end warm season species such es western <br />wheatgress (Aoroovron smithii), needle-end-thread (Stioa comets), junegrass ( 1 ri <br />macrentha), sideoets greme (Bouteloue curtioendule), blue greme (Bouteloue aracilis), little <br />bluestem (Schizechvrium scoDerium), and Indiengress (Sorahastrum nutans). Locally, the <br />introduced annual grasses Japanese brome and cheetgress ere overwhelmingly dominant. <br /> <br />
