fifty points per transect. Twenty transects were sampled in the entire
area (six in the area seeded in 1984 and fourteen in the area seeded in
1988). The sites that were sampled in 1992 were in the same general
locations ae those sampled in 1989, 1990 and 1991. Data were recorded
as "hits" on vegetation (recorded by species), litter, bare soil or
rock. The data were summarized by computing mean cover, relative cover
(percent of total vegetation cover attributed to each species),
frequency (the number of transects of occurrence by a species divided by
the total number of transects), and relative frequency (percent of the
total number of transects of occurrence attributed to each species.
Relative cover and relative frequency were summed to obtain an
importance value on which all species were aerially ranked.
Information on species diversity was obtained by keeping track of
all the observed species in each of the sampled areas. The mean number
of species per transect was also determined. Species that were observed
in each of the areas but were not encountered ae hits on the transect
lines, appear in the cover data tables ae species with less than one
percent mean cover and zero percent frequency.
RESULTS
Complete cover summaries for the 1984 area, the 1988 area and the
two areas combined are presented in Tables 1, 3 and 5, respectively.
The key cover values are summarized below (+/- values equal the standard
deviation):
-2-
