Febeuary 2003 Hayden Gukh Terminal, 7nr. * Hayden Gnkh Loadout - 2002 Annual Hydrology Itcpon ~ Page 4
HGTI has compiled a list of water quality standards for livestock. This list is composed primarily of
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) standards, although other
regulatory agency standards were used if they were more stringent or if CDPHE has no standard for a
paxticu]ar constituent. Table 4, Compan.ron of 2002 Surface IY/aterQuality to Lsvertock Standardr, provides a
list of the livestock standards along with a comparison of those standards to 2002 surface water quality
data. Units of concentration are as listed in Table 4. Laboratory analytical reports generally report
constituent concentrations as mg/l. The following constituents exceeded their respective standard:
• manganese (standard of 200 µg/I):
HGSDl on 10/28/02 (790 pg/1)
• sulfate (standard of 500 mg/1):
HGSDl on 5/31 /02 (1,890 mg/1) and 10/28/02 (3,000 mg/1)
HGSD3 on 5/31/02 (2,]20 mg/1)
• total dissolved solids (2,500 mg/1):
HGSDl on 5/31/02 (3,210 mg/1) and 10/28/02 (4,720 mg/1)
HGSD3 on 5/31/02 (3,500 mg/1)
Wlu1e these values were greater than their respective criteria, historic values for these constituents at
both locations typically exceeded the respective criterion.
3.3 GROUNDWATER DATA
Groundwater data fox 2002 is presented in Appendix D, GroundwaterQuality Data. Presently, HGTI is
only monitoring alluvial groundwater in monitoring well, HGDAL3. In 1993, HGTI installed
HGDAL3 as a new downdip alluvial monitoring well in response to Colorado Division of Minerals
and Geology {CDMG) concerns that the two existing alluvial wells, HGDALl and HGDAL2, may
have been partially completed in the Lewis Shale. Groundwater quafity data was collected from
monitoring wells HGDALl and HGDAL2 between 1987 and 1995. Groundwater monitoring ceased
for HGDALl and HGDAL2 in 1995. The location of the groundwater monitoring wells are shown of
Figure 1, Manitorrng Site Location Map. HGTI reported in the existing, valid Mining and Reclamation
Permic (revision date of May 1998) that chemistry information obtained in HGDAL3 is similar to the
historic chetnistry depicted by monitoring wells HGDALl and HGDAL2.
In general, the 2002 groundwater quality data from HGDAL3 is similar to previously observed values.
The values reported in the May sampling event were generally within values reported previously with a
few exceptions. Alkalinity (671 mg/1), calcium (362 mg/I), chloride (380 mg/1), fluoride (0.] mg/1),
hardness (4,620 mg/1), magnesium (903 mg/1), and sulfate (8,650 mg/1) values all represent new
minimums for this well. The value of nitrate as nitrogen (0.04 mg/I) was higher than reported
previously. The values reported for the October sampling event were also generally within the range
of those reported previously. Exceptions included aluminum (0.4 mg/1), nickel (0.2 mg/1), sodium (14
mg/1), silver (0.1 mg/1), total suspended solids (3,070 mg/1), and hydrogen sulfide (3.9 mg/1), which
were all slightly above values reported previously.
A comparison of the data collected at HGDAL3 in 2002 to that collected in prior years is presented in
Appendix D. Historic water quality data for HGDAL7 and HGDAL2 are also presented in Appendix
D.
MU%H * 7475 Pine Grove Road, Suite 109 * Steamboat Springy, CO 80477 * (970) 879-6160
w
