This is the sagebrush-wheatgrass reference area which is
approximately 2.0 acres in size.
• Success criteria will be defined on the basis of cover, woody plant density (number of
woody plants in unit area), species diversity, and production (gm/m2) as they relate to the
vegetation in the reference plot. The success criteria will be established consistent with
DMG's Regulation, Section 4.15.8.
' This phase helped WFLJ and DMG determine the mix of topsoil/subsoil cover which was
placed on the refuse pile and set a procedure for conducting statistical evaluation of the
revegetation success.
' Test Plot Reclamation Plan
The test plot reclamation plan consisted of the following tasks.
' • Eight test plots, each 100' x 100' in size, were established and fenced in RP-1. Four of
these plots have northern exposure. The other four plots have southern exposure.
Figure 1 shows the location of these plots. The test plots were labelled as to their cover
' thickness.
• Each set of the four test plots were covered with varying thicknesses of topsoil/subsoil:
' 12-inch, 24-inch, 3(rinch and 48-inch. All plots have 12-inches of topsoil cover. On the
12-inch cover plot, all of the material is topsoil with no subsoil. The other three plots
' have 12-inch, 24-inch, and 36-inch of subsoil under the 12-inches of topsoil. The test
plots were constructed in July, 1990 concurrent with the reclamation of the refuse pile
RP-1. The seed mix which was utilized on the test plots is contained in Table 1.
• The test plots were mulched with straw, and seeded with a rangeland seed drill to form
a crimped mulch.
Post-reclamation Investigation
' The post-reclamation investigation will consist of the following tasks:

1
4
