' 1.0 INTRODUC11ON
This report, 'Deserado Mine Twelfth Annual Hydrology Report' is submitted to the Office of Mined
Land Reclamation in fulfillment of requirements outlined in a letter and attachments dated October
10, 1984, from Mr. Dan Mathews of what was then the Mine Land Reclamation Division. This report
' presents the hydrologic data and analysis resulting from the Deserado Mine hydrologic monitoring
program for the period October 1, 1995 to September 30, 1996.
' The purpose of this Annual Hydrology Report is to describe the present hydrologic conditions in the
Deserado Mine area in relation to the baseline hydrologic data in order to:
• Define Vends in the hydrologic parameters.
• Determine what impact development of the Deserado Mine has had on the hydrology of
' the area.
• Determine what mitigative measures should be undertaken in the future.
• Predict future impacts on the hydrology of the Deserado Mine area.
' This annual hydrologic report has been organized into three major sections. Section 1.0 is the
' introduction, Section 2.0 is a summary of the hydrologic data collected this monitoring year and
Section 3.0 summarizes observations from the monitoring program in relation to development of the
Deserado Mine.
A major event that occurred dudng the monitoring period and which had impact on the monitoring
program was the Deserado Mine underground fire of January 31, 1996. In order to control the fire,
the underground working disVid had to be sealed which resulted in a loss of about four years of
mine life in the D-Seam. This required that WFU accelerate the B-Seam development and mining.
' DMG permit stipulates that surface and underground water monitoring of certain sites be continued
one year before surface related disturbance occurs in federal coal lease C-8424 and C-8425. Such
monitoring was initiated during this monitoring period in anticipation of B-Seam mining in the near
t future. As per the technical revision no. 40 approved by DMG in June, 1996, WFU is required to
do the following:
'
• Sample and analyze bedrock groundwater holes in federal leases C-8424 and C-8425 for
the parameters listed under alluvial once prior to entering the lease for mining and once prior
' to the wells being mined out or bond release. Sampling will be limited to the middle facie
zone.
' • The holes in C-8424 and C-8425 will be monitored for water level depth two times (spring
and fall) per year.
1

1
1
