contributed 0.9 percent to total vegetation cover. Thirteen native perennial forbs were observed
in the Wadge Pasture area, but together they only contributed 0.6 percent of total vegetation
cover. Introduced annual grasses were observed but did not contribute to total vegetation.
Total vegetation cover was 65.6 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock cover values
were 1.0, 26.0, 7.0, and 0.4 percent respectively. Species density averaged 15.9 species per 100
sq. m.
Production (Table 16)
Average production for alfalfa was 530.0 pounds per acre in the Wadge Pasture area. Other
species contributed 1,807.8 pounds per acre. Total combined production for the Wadge Pastore
area was 2,337.5 pounds per acre.
Woody Plant Density Data (Table 17)
Native shrubs averaged 360.2 stems per acre. Big sagebrush contributed three-fifths of this total.
Mountain snowberry contributed nearly three-fifths and mountain serviceberry provided nearly
two-fifths of the total. The remaining balance was accounted for by Saskatoon serviceberry,
silver sagebrush, rubber rabbitbrush, and Douglas rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus visciditlorus).
Mountain Brush Reference Area
(Photographs 25)
Cover (Table 8)
Native shrubs were the dominant lifeform in this area and contributed 81.4 percent of total
vegetation cover. Gambel's oak contributed nearly one-half of this lifeform's total. Saskatoon
serviceberry contributed nearly one-third of this total. Mountain snowberry contributed one-eighth
of the this total. The remainder of the total was comprised of chokecherry, Wood's rose, common
• juniper, big sagebrush, and dogwood (Swida sericea). Native perennial cool season grasses
contributed 9.0 percent of total vegetation cover. Agassiz bluegrass accounted for more than
two-thirds and Nelson needlegrass (Achnatherum nelsonii) accounted for one-fourth of this
lifeform's total. The remainder was comprised of onion grass(Bromelica spectabilis), elk sedge
(Carex geyen) and western wheatgrass. Native perennial forbs averaged 5.3 percent of total
vegetation cover. Colorado violet (Viola scopulorum) and Richard geranium (Geranium
richardsonii) each contributed about one-fourth of this lifeform's total. Horsemint (Monarda
fistu/osa var. menthifolia), western yarrow, wild buckweet (Eriogonum umbellatum), wild
strawberry (Frasera virginiana ssp. glauca), seemly sweetpea (Lathyrus eucosmus) Fendler
meadowrue (Thalictrum fendleri) and American vetch accounted for the balance. Twenty-three
other native perennial forbs were observed in the mountain brush reference area but did not
contribute to the total. Hound's tongue was the only introduced perennial forb observed in this
area and contributed 2.7 percent to total vegetation cover. One fern species, braken fern
(Pteridium aquilinum ssp. lanuginosum) was observed in this area and contributed 1.4 percent to
total vegetation cover. Native trees contributed 0.2 percent of total vegetation cover.
Total vegetation cover was 82.8 percent. Standing dead, Litter and bare soil were 1.0, 11.0, and
5.2 percent respectively. Species density was 22.7 species per 100 sq.m.
Production (Table 19)
Total herbaceous production for all species was 519.3 pounds per acre. No alfalfa was observed
in this native reference area.
12
