Las Animas County, Colorado COMMENTS: The waste disposal area was inspected and found to be!in get~eram compliance with the mining permit No. C-82-055. ' The entire waste disposal slopes and top surface has approximately four (4) inches of crusted surface; which will resist or reduce erosion. The southwest and south side of the embankment (slopes) exhibit small erosion rills, which are throughout the slope area. These rills vary in depth of six (6) to approximately eighteen (18) inches. The base of the rills is also crusted and firm. The top of the embankment is generally graded to drain to the northeast. A berm composed of waste material 1s located at the top of the southwest embankment side slope. This berm is some what ' irregular and shows signs of water segregation. The northeast ~ and south embankments also have a berm with a drainage ditch which drains the top of the disposal area.to'the northeast:'The top of the waste area embankment exhibits several small irregularities; of the sloped surface, caused by tracking of heavy equipment. The diversion ditches No. 1 and 2 along the refuse area show nol signs of erosion. The bottom of the ditches is mostly of sand- stone..Small amounts of sediment is in the ditches. The east .embankment shows signs of recent grading at the upper portion. ', The slopes are approximately on a 3:1 ratio. RECOMMENDATIONS: (1) That no heavy equipment be used on the slopes to correct the erosion rills, The crusted surface (as is) will have far less sediment dislodgement than if disturbed. (2) The ; rills should receive close observation during the next quarter and if decrusted, then placing of straw dissipators will be necessary to control further erosion, (3) The berm located at the top of the slopes is irregular but will cause no determent to the drainage'. (4) Reclamation of this refuse area should be made at the earliest possible time.
