• CONCLUSIONS
Hydrologic sampling of two natural springs occurring below the mine site showed no
significant changes in pazameter values during the 2002 water yeaz that would indicate
concerns with water associated with the area of the coal mining operation. Springs 3 and 4
both flowed during the sampling events in water year 2002. pH has increased slightly in
both springs over the last three water years. Springs 3 and 4 have exhibited slight to
significant decreases in the concentrations of bicarbonate and sodium. Spring 4 has shown
decreased concentrations of chlorine, magnesium, manganese, and sulfate over the past
seven water years, while Spring 3 has not shown any significant change in the
concentrations of the same parameters.
Groundwater wells above and below the mine site showed few significant changes in
pazameter values during the 2002 water year. Wells 94-1 and 95-1 showed overall
decreases in TDS concentrations over time. Well 17-B (above the mine) showed a
decrease in concentrations of chloride this water year from last water yeaz. Well 95-1
(below the mine) showed decreases of note in ammonia concentrations and chloride
concemrations from last water year.
SEDIMENT POND INSPECTIONS AND DISCHARGES
The Carbon Junction Mine has two sediment ponds, 001 and 002. Monte Potter of Four
• Corners Materials prepared inspection reports for both sediment ponds during the third
(June 28, 2002), and fourth (September 7, 2002) quarters of the 2002 water year.
Sediment pond inspection reports are included for the 2002 water year. No significant
concerns were identified during the inspections.
Neither sediment pond discharged during water year 2002 as reported on CDPS discharge
monitoring reports. Copies of available reports for the 2002 water year aze appended to
the end of this report.
•
CaH»n JuncLbn Mine Page 71
Annual Hydroiogla RePmtfnr Water Year 1A02
