Carter Mazch 12, 1998
Re: Response to Susan Burgmaier's comments on the 1996 Annual Hydrologic Report
Discussion:
The monitoring of wells B-6 and H-10 shows the Somerset Mine has filled to a level where the
water inflow to the mine equals [hat which is leaching out of the mine, and the average total
dissolved solids concentration has not significantly increased above 2,731 mg/l. The monitoring of
the Sanbom Creek Mine discharge, Outfall 011 does not show a significant increase in total
dissolved solids concentration above 2,940 mg/l, or a pattern of exceeding 425 gpm averaged over
a 7-day period. The monitoring of the North Fork of the Gunnison River does not show a
significant increase in total dissolved solids concentration above 328 mg/l.
' Graph 6 shows the total dissolved solids concentration for the monitoring of the North Fork of the
Gunnison River at NF-1, NF-2, and NF-3. Graph 7 shows the total dissolved solids concentration
for the monitoring of the North Fork of the Gunnison River at G-1 and G-2 from 1980 to 1982.
' Monitoring site G-1 was located downstream below Hubbazd Creek. G-2 was located upstream
above the intake for the water supply, and would be comparable to NF-1. There does not appear to
be a significant difference between the current monitoring data and the baseline data.

1

1

"Aquatic Impairment Study of the Sanbom Creek Mine Discharge, Somerset, Colorado" by John
C. Emerick, Nevis E. Cook, and Susan M. Hoffrneister, January 30, 1995 shows there is no
significant impact to the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Trends which aze apparent in the data,
if any, as well as possible explanations for any apparent anomalies, if any, are irrelevant to the
probable hydrologic consequences for the Sanbom Creek Mine at this time. Should trends which
are apparent in the data, if any, as well as possible explanations for any apparent anomalies, if any,
become relevant to the probable hydrologic consequences for the Sanbom Creek Mine, they will be
discussed in future reports.
Sincerely,
Thomas C.
