The
alluvial terraces have been modified by consduction of Colorado State Highway 133. The alluvial
terrace east of Sanborn Creek contains the infiltration field for the water supply for the mine and the
Town of Somerset. As a domestic water supply, the water is sampled monthly. The samples are sent
to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment for analysis. The samples must meet
drinking water quality standards.
Furthermore, any significant negative impact to the alluvium of the North Fork of the Gunnison River
would also be detected in the monitoring of NF-2, downstream of the azea that could be impacted by
any seepage from the Somerset Mine. Even if another monitoring well was installed in the alluvium of
the North Fork of the Gunnison River, the information gathered would not change the condition of the
abandoned workings in the Somerset Mme that have erristed for over 75 years.
22
