On December 3, 1997, we received a fax
' copy of your December 3, 1997 letter to Mazk Milner requesting responses to Susan Burgmaier's
comments, followed by the letter received in the mail at a later date.
During this time period, Mark Milner was apart-time employee for the Sanbom Creek Mine. We
have been quite busy since you first delivered a copy of the memorandum to us, and I apologize for
the delay in the response. We aze pleased to say Mazk is now with us full time, and we have plenty
' of work to keep him busy.
The following are responses to all the comments by Susan Burgmaier about the 1996 Annual
' Hydrologic Report for the Sanbom Creek Mine:
Comment l.a.
' "The text of the AHR notes that Site WSC DH 12 was not monitored in 1996 because the low water
level and well depth prohibit bailing and sampling. OCM notes that a power bailer will be built to
make sampling of the well easier. OCM should make sure that whatever necessary equipment for
monitoring is on line for the required June sampling this yeaz."
' Response l.a.
Available records indicate the depth of WSC DH12 is approximately 1,550 feet. The "well" was
originally drilled as a methane degassification hole into the Hawk's Nest Mine by Western Slope
' Carbon, Inc., and continues to produce methane gas. The Hawk's Nest Mine map shows the
location of [he drill hole in the longwall panel between 7th West and 8th West. The exact condition
of the bottom of the drill hole in the gob area of the longwall panel is unknown.
1

P. O.
