~~
STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Governor
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Director
DATE: July 18, 1989
T0: Dan T. Mathews
FROM: Randy P. Price ~•
RE: Chimney Rock Mine Annual Hydrologic Report for 1988
I have reviewed the 1988 Annual Hydrologic Report (AHR) for the Chimney Rock
Mine. The AHR contains monitoring data for years 1485 thru 1988. The report
was well written, contained valid interpretations of monitoring data and
presented data in both graphical and tabulated form. The report did not
indicate that there were any adverse environmental impacts caused by mining.
The report contained a brief description of the hydrologic regime with a list
of sampling locations. Each location had a description of the formation or
stream segment that was monitored and the type of impacts that might be
expected to occur as a result of mining. Summaries of revisions that have
been made to the permit that effected water monitoring were included in the
report.
The Chimney Rock mine is currently on a quarterly monitoring schedule for all
sampling sites. Three (3) sites are located on Stollsteimer Creek, the rest
are alluvial or deep ground water wells in the Fruitland Formation. All wells
are bailed 3 casing volumes; this evacuates stale water in the casing that may
not represent the water quality in the aquifer. Quarterly pond inspection
reports were included in the report. It was mentioned in the report that in
1988 there were 2 NPDES discharges from Pond 005 but results were not given.
Monitoring results indicate that there are no detectable adverse environmental
impacts due to mining. As expected a spoils aquifer is establishing in the
reclaimed area. Water levels and conductivity in spoils monitoring well W-16
show increases. However, spring and seep monitoring of the reclaimed area did
not show any seeps. The water in spoils monitoring well W-16 was fairly low
in TDS as compared to other spoils aquifers in Colorado. Generally spoils
aquifers run 3500 mg/l, but the well W-16 shows only levels up to 1050 mg/1.
/bdc
7936E
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203.2273 Tel.
