SITE RECLAMATION ACTIVITY
APRIL 2002 TO MARCH 2003
Reclamation activity during the 2002 reporting year (April 2002 to
March 2003) consisted of site cleaning, maintenance of vegetated
areas and placement of the American Tunnel #3 Bulkhead.
In the following sections of this report, environmental activity
during the 2002 reporting year and planned environmental activity
for the 2003 reporting year is discussed on a site by site basis.
A summary of acreage permitted, disturbed, and undergoing
reclamation is presented in Table A (page 2).
Reclamation maps have not changed from the maps submitted with the
2001 reporting year and are not included with this report.
AMERICAN TtTNNEL PORTAL AREA - Plate No. 1
During the 2002 reporting year, no additional acreage was disturbed
or reclaimed.
Reclamation and environmental activity during 2002 consisted of;
1) general site cleaning. Solid waste was disposed of via the
local landfill collection company and scrap steel was stored
for eventual shipment for recycle.
2) maintenance of stormwater runoff controls.
3) construction of the American Tunnel No.3 Bulkhead. Valve
closure occurred in December 2002.
4) treatment of water discharge from the portal along with
diverted Cement Creek water according to the CDPS Permit for
this site and the related Consent Decree agreement with CDPHE.
Treatment included periodic cleaning of the settling ponds
with a mudcat dredge and tanker trucks. The material removed
was hauled to the Mayflower Mill-Tailings Pond No.4.
There was one discharge permit parameter exceedence during the
2002 reporting year. This occurred in December after the
American Tunnel drainage had been shut off and only Cement
Creek was being treated per the Consent Decree agreement with
CDPHE. Readjustment of the system to the cold water and
reduced flow took some time creating the upset that occurred.
5) monitoring and maintenance of vegetated areas.
The buildings and water treatment equipment were deeded to Gold
King Mines Corporation for their use. The American Tunnel discharge
permit was transferred to Gold King in January 2003 under the terms
of the 4th Amendment to the Consent Decree agreement with CDPHE.
Upon transfer, Gold King began operating the treatment plant as an
offsite treatment facility for their water and any residual seepage
from the American Tunnel.
