Walther
Ezeculive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Acting Division Director
The Division has reviewed Seneca Coal Company's (BCC's) 2001 Annual Hydrology Report
(AHR) for the Seneca II-W Mine. The frequency of data collection is in compliance with the
approved monitoring plan contained in the permit document. The 2001 AHR is well written and
the required data aze presented in a concise manner.
Samples for water quality analysis could not be obtained at one surface water sample location
and several spring locations. Surface water site SW-S2W-SG9 was not sampled in September as
required because of low flow conditions. Water quality samples were not obtained from spring
location S-5 because the spring was dry in September/November. Springs S-41 and 5-49 were
not sampled because these springs were buried in spoils and/or abandoned due to mining. One
field paramater analysis was obtained at 5-49 in June, 2001.
Samples for water quality analysis were not obtained at several groundwater monitoring locations
due to the wells going dry or not enough water to sample. Wells GW-S2W-4W, GW-S2W-
40V2, and GW-S2W-20A were dry. Only one sample was collected in May 2001 at GW-S2W-
4WC and a problem was noted with the well in October 2001. Well GW-S2W-16W had water in
the well casing but enough to obtain samples for laboratory analysis. Samples were not collected
in October for wells GW-S2W-160V and GW-S2W-22A due to a lack of water.
