• Herbaceous production samples within each reclaimed area or reference area totaled as
follows:
Area Number of 0.5 so. m. Plots
1990 Reclaimed Areas 20
Mountain Brush Reference
Sagebrush Reference
25
25
Clipped material was returned to the ESCO laboratory and dried at 105 °C for 24 hours, then
weighed to the nearest 0.1 gm.
Shrub Density Sampling
Shrub density sampling was undertaken in the 1990 reclamation unit as well as the Wadge
Pasture reclamation unit of the Seneca II Mine. Shrub density was measured within 2 x 50 m
quadrats ("belt transects") oriented along the cover transect (where a cover sample was also
taken). In the two reference areas, no shrub sampling was conducted, since it had been
• sampled very extensively in previous years and resulting data would not have an effect on a
woody plant density performance standard. It should be noted that all big sagebrush
encountered were referred to Seraphidium tridentatum.
Total numbers of shrub density transects in each area were as follows:
Reclaimed Area Number of Transects
1990 Reclaimed Areas 20
Wadge Pasture (Two-Stage) 45
Mountain Brush Reference --
Sagebrush Reference
All shrubs, including seedlings, with root crowns found within the quadrat boundaries were
tabulated by species and by life stages as follows: Seedling, Mature, or Dead.
The Wadge Pasture was sampled using atwo-stage statistical design as set forth in Chapter 10
of Cochran (1977). The Wadge Pasture was divided into 20 equal-sized primary sample units
• and fifteen of these were randomly chosen to receive sampling (see Map 2, "Wadge Pasture 2-
stage sampling units"). Within each of the chosen primary sample units three (3) points were
3
