1
Test plots have been maintained by Powderhorn Coal Company personnel.
Maintenance has included repairing rills and gullies in accordance with Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology regulations and guidance, fencing and or staking the
Test Plots to prevent unauthorized disturbance, and controlling listed noxious plants,
' again in accordance with Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology regulations and
guidance.
Subsequent evaluations of soil chemistry and revegetation success which compared the
Test Plots with the Shadscale Shrubland Reference Area were undertaken in 1986 and
1988 (WRDC, 1986, 1989, Champion, 1986). As of this year, the RDA Test Plots
have been in place ten years, equivalent to the minimum revegetation liability period
required in the west at coal mines. It is appropriate that the Roadside RDA Test Plot
' study be concluded with a fuial revegetation and soil analysis at this time. Results and
conclusions from the study will determine the necessity of additional soil material
placement on the RDA. Results will also contribute to the empirical knowledge base
regarding the necessity of deep soil material placement over coal waste and the ultimate
revegetation potential of such structures.
Cl

1
1

3
