snowmelt runoff. Flows decreased throughout the summer months to a low in
August when utilization of water for upstream reservoir stabilization, irrigation
and evapotranspiration uses were greatest. Flows were relatively consistent during
January, February and June through December.
Flow was measured at the Deep Creek surface station from March 11
through June 28. The range measured varied from 24.13 to 0.19 efs on the above
dates, respectively (Appendix 1). A no flow condition was observed at the station
during regular samplings throughout the other periods of the year. No chemical
parameters were sampled at the Deep Creek station.
Surface water chemistry was observed to be stable over the three
stations (Table 1 and Appendix 1). The water may be classified as a calcium
sulfate/bicarbonate type water with April's sampling exhibiting a lower degree of
ionization due to high dilution from snowmelt. This was indicated by the
concentration levels of major water constituents such as calcium, magnesium,
sodium, bicarbonnte, and sulfate which influenced conductivity and TDS.
Analysis of trace metals indicated acceptable concentrations. The
parameters of arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, molybdenum and selenium were at
or below the detection limit during all samplings. Manganese end zinc were found
to be present at each station only in trace amounts. Aluminum and iron are the
two major metal parameters with elevated concentrations observed during the high
flow period in April. Concentrations of these two metals were within stream
standards.
Mining operations at the Chimney Rock Mine appear to have little or no
effect on the quantity or quality of area surface waters. During production, no
surface waters were utilized for operations. Also, sediment control ponds
established on the disturbed areas eliminated runoff of surface waters from the
mine site. During 1985, no discharge was recorded from any of the sediment ponds.
7
