the soil is the low lime content in the northern end and high lime content in <br />the southern end. The pH on the surface is 8.2 while the subsurface pH ranges <br />from 8.2 to 8.4. The organic matter content ranges from 1.7 percent to 2.0 <br />percent on the surface and ranges from 1.1 percent to 1.3 percent between the <br />6 and 12 inch depth. The electrical conductivity in the surface foot ranges <br />from .6 mmhos/cm to 1.1 mmhos/cm. The sodium adsorption ratio ranges from 0.7 <br />to 1.3 on the surface and from 2.8 to 8.3 between the o- and 12-inch depth. <br />The area is characterized by the Alkaline Slopes Range Site (SCS 1575) which <br />is dominated by big sage (Artemisia tridentata wyomingensis), greasewood <br />(Sacrobatus vermiculatus) an s a esca a t~rtp ex con erttfolia). However, <br />t e st t e is to po' oar con ition and dominated-by c atgrass romus tectorum) <br />and blue mustard (Chlorispora tenella). The optimum ground cover o~ rTsite <br />is 15 to 20 percent perennial 'nasal ground cover and the air dry forage <br />production ranges from 400 to 700 pounds per acre. <br />1.1ETHODS <br />The project was established in late October and early November of 1983. A <br />replicated split plot design with internal treatments ~•+as used. The plots <br />were designed to evaluate three seed mixtures, imprinting, mulch, phosphorous, <br />and two herbicides. Table 1 lists the 32 treatments that were applied to each <br />of the three seed mixtures, with each treatment replicated three times. <br />Half of each 8 x 20-foot plot was imprinted, reducing the size to 9 x 20 <br />feet. To evaluate the two application dates for Glean, half of each 9 x <br />20-foot plot scheduled to receive Glean was sprayed on the two dates, further <br />reducing the size of those plots to 9 x 10 feet (Figures 2 and 3). <br />Seed mixtures A and B consisted of warm and cool season grasses, fortis, and <br />shrubs that were thought to be adapted to the sites. Seed mixture C consisted <br />of species typically recommended by BLM for revegetating surface disturbances <br />in the area. Table 2 lists the species and seeding rates used on the plots. <br />The plots were chisel plowed on October 27, 1983, to break up compaction <br />resulting from pipeline construction. After permanently staking the plot <br />corners, phosphorous fertilizer (P205) was broadcast on the plots <br />scheduled for phosphorous, at a rate of 150 lbs actual/acre. Phosphorous was <br />applied to stimulate root development of the seedlings and was to be followed <br />by an application of nitrogen. However, due to the weed competition and only <br />fair seedling establishment, the nitrogen application was cancelled. <br />The plots were disced to incorporate the phosphorous and roller harrowed to <br />firm the seedbed. On October 31, 1583, the three seed mixtures were drilled <br />using only one seed box on a Tye drill. Only enough seed was mixed to seed <br />the plots, so sawdust filler was used on the first seed mixture (mixture A). <br />This caused problems with the seed flow through the drill so the last two <br />mixtures (B and C) were drilled without the sawdust filler. This did not <br />effect the seed distribution or seedling establishment. <br />Weed free 'flagnar' basin wildrye mulch, obtained from the UCEPC, was applied <br />at a rate of 3,000 lbs/acre to plots scheduled to receive mulch.
