Appendix B
Sylvester Gulch Data Acquisition Needs
Road alignment survey
Considerations
• Preliminary alignment follows Sylvester Gulch inclose proximity to the creek
channel. Schematic cross sections show proposed roadway as being no more than
about 20 feet above the creek bed. (Based on 10 and 20 foot contow intervals)
• Initial design goals include:
Limit construction distwbance
Minimise cut and fill depths
Balance cut and fill quantities and minimize haul distance
The survey should cover a sufficient width to allow for evaluation of alignment shifts
Execution
1. Tie elevations to permanent MSL benchmark.
2. Set new benchmarks in protected locations at approximate 500 foot intervals.
3. Survey Sylvester Gulch beginning at least 200 feet before start of new road and ending at
least 200 feet past the point of junctwe with the existing road.
4. Survey cross sections at 50 foot intervals and in-fill where significant topographic breaks
occurring between sections.
5. Extend cross sections left and right of channel to a point at least 75 feet higher than the
channel bottom
6. Note location of all tributary streams and profile their channels to limits of sections.
7. Note locations of all soil test pits and/or borings.
8. Locate boundaries of delineated wetlands within the area of interest.
Soil Survey
Objectives
• Identify major soil types and profiles.
• Determine depth to bedrock and groundwater.
• Determine soil classification, plasticity, grain-size distribution, density, natwal moisture
content, unit cohesion, internal friction, and CBR values.
