60,250 cubic yards in Phase VI were moved. A remaining 29,500 cubic yards of 808 soil type
• was left in place to allow further de-watering and it will be moved in the first quarter of 1996.
Tonsoil Thickness
The thickness of soil replaced during 1994 was verified by sampling. Sample sites for the New
Horizon 2 mining area were selected systematically utilizing a 467 foot by 467 foot grid pattern.
Sites at New Horizon 2 were surveyed and staked in the field using a Geodimeter 510 total
survey station.
A 2-314 inch bucket auger was used at each site [o excavate a pilot hole through the entire soil
strata. An abrupt boundary, defined by color and rock fragment content, typically occurred at
the soil/spoil interface. The replaced soil thickness was measured' through the pilot hole
immediately after encountering the spoil.
Soil thickness was determined at the 15 sample sites at NH2 shown on Exhibit 95.4. Soil
thickness information for each sample site is located on the map.
New Horizon 2 has many different soil thickness requirements as shown on Exhibit 95.6, which
is 2.05.4-4 from the current permit.
Topsoil ualit_v
At NH2 15 topsoil samples have been taken and sent to CSU for analysis as shown in
Attachment 95.B. All sample show good fertility and fertilization amounts have been based off
• these tests.
Topsoil Salvage and Storaee
All suitable soil has been salvaged ahead of mining at New Horizon 2. Approximately 104,900
(LIFT 2), 12,900 (LIFT 1), and 36,000 (MIXED) cubic yards of soil are stored in stockpiles at
the end of 1995. The soils were separately stockpiled by soil types as specified by our permit.
Cover Cron
All topsoil stockpiles have been planted with the approved cover crop seed mixture. Only one
stockpile was seeded in 1995.
Weed and Pest Control Activities
Weed control was carried out in [he summer and fall months of 1995. Target species included
Russian Knapweed, Canada Thistle, Sun Flower and Field Bindweed. Spot sparing was done
on 194 acres at NH2, see Exhibit 95.3. The treated sites were small and random. To small to
plot on a rnap accurately. A log was kept as shown on Attachment 95.C.
Fertilization
A total of 78.36 acres were fertilized at NH1 and 36.2 acres at NH2. A mixture of 18%
nitrogen, 46% phosphate and 0% potassium was spread a various rates according to Topsoil need
and projected irrigation.
2
