This
was primarily due to the very active construction market throughout the Colorado Springs area. However, in
spite of all the mining done, the quarry changed very little. This was because of the large quantity of material
that was available within areas that had previously been pxepaxed fox mining. The land on the north side of the
affected land was mined to a large extent. Mining on the south side of the operation where mining has been
done the last few years has essentially been completed, but mining on the floor of the quarry below that south
side is continuing.
Annual Report Maps: The enclosed color map shows the primary areas of disturbance and the type of
disturbance occurring in each area. This map was not changed from last year. The disturbance categories shown
on last year's map cover the same areas this year. Changes in the boundaries between the disturbance categories
were so small they could not be meaningfully mapped.
Affected Lands: The amount of affected has not changed from last year. Mining on the north side of the
operation lowered that area considerably and to such an extent virtually none of the quarry is now visible from
Highway 115.
Revegetation: The site is stable and is not subject to erosion. No revegetarion was done in 2001 as no land
was available to xevegetate. However, the south side benches that have been completed axe being pxepaxed for
xevegetation. Prior to implementing any xevegetation on the south benches a thorough examination of the
invading vegetation will be made. Significant invasion of both herbaceous and woody species has occurred and
by examining the nature of this invasion major indicators may be identified that could lead to a refinement of
the revegetadon plan so it better matches the environment of the site.
Expected Activity (2004): The mining zone (orange on the map) will continue in this area as this is lowered
somewhat more. It is also expected that mining will begin to occur in the newly stripped area on the west side
of the existing quarry. Some additional cut trees need to be removed from this area by the contractor. In
examining the mining plan and its implementation over the next several years it has become apparent that the
precise sequence for mining the west end of Phase 1 may present some significant problems with regard to
access routes. It is possible that it will be necessary to alter the direction of mining originally planned. Such a
change will not have any impact on the reclamation plan or the final land uses. A change may also provide a
more favorable control over drainage from mined areas which could also become a problem before Phase 1 is
completed. If changes axe made, the Division will be consulted to see if a formal permit change is needed to
reorder the mining direction and sequencing.
Bonding: This operation is covered by a self bond
Schmidt Construction Company 2003 Annual Report M-76-009-HR Menzer Quarry Page 1 of 1
