Walker, Byron
From: Walker, Byron
Sent: Thursday, February 24, 2005 12:49 PM
To: 'Brian Watterson'
Cc: Hernandez, Dan
Subject: RE: Twentymile Annual Hydrology Report
Dear Mr. Watterson, your request to extend the due date for the Twentymile Annual Hydrology Report for the
2004 water year to April 14, 2005, is approved. Please let me know soonest of any event that might preclude
arrival of the final report at the Division of Minerals and Geology by April 14, 2005. Yours truly, Byron G. Walker
EPS
-----Original Message-----
From: Brian Watterson [mailto:BWaerson@peabodyenergy.com]
Sent: Thursday, February 24, 2005 9:02 AM
To: Byron.walker@state.co.us
Subject: Re: Twentymile Annual Hydrology Report
Dear Byron:
During the transfer of Twentymile to Peabody, RAG kept the rights to our existing tailor-made Oracle
database. Thus, our existing data base was taken away in April 2004. During the summer of 2004,
Peabody personnel in St. Louis, Illinois attempted to adapt a Peabody database for Twentymile, including
transfering historical data into that database. The process was started, however the IT person heading
the database changes (Adelheid Kalfus) apparently left the company before completion. In the Fall,
Peabody brought in an environmental employee from another mine to briefly talk with us about the
database. It became obvious that additional training and modification of the new database would be
necessary. I apologize that Peabody/Twentymile has not taken care of this situation in a more timely
manner. Communicating with Peabody IT personnel long distance has been difficult.
In addition, the loss of Rick Mills last year, working to bring the new Environmental Manager (Jerry
Nettleton) up to speed, ongoing Peabody data requests as part of the transfer process, and the recent
loss of a family member had put a greater demand on my time.
Please note: No upset conditions have been noted for the 2004 water year. Tom Kaldenbach is very
familiar with the hydro history of Twentymile, and was kind enough to grant us an extension last year
during part of the Peabody acquisition process and loss of Mr. Mills. Tom can verify that no significant
DMG comments resulted from review of the 2001, 2002, or 2003 AHRs. During my time with Twentymile, I
have submitted the 2001 and 2002 AHRs on time and actually submitted the 2002 AHR about 3 months
early. I am confident that I can complete the AHR (hand-entering data as necessary) within the time frame
of the requested extension.
Twentymile appreciates your consideration of our request for an extension for the 2004 AHR.
Brian A. Watterson,
Geologist, Environmental Group
(970)870-2750
2/24/2005
