i
TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM
DATE: 26 September, 1996
TO: Dan Robertson, Sally Hayes Kaiser (IIMRp
FROM: Mark J. Logsdon (Geochimica)
SUBJECT: EVALUATION OF GEOCHEMICAL TESTING OE
ADDITIONAL,~DI;EY SAMPLES FROM LOWER
TAILINGS IMPOUNDMENT -SAN LUIS
cc: A. 11a(drige, S. Rrotvn (BMGC)
BACKGROUND
In Apri] I992, the Colorado Division of Mines and Geology (DIvIG) issued a Notice of
Violation to Battle Mountain Resources, Inc. (BMRI) related to Reclamation ;Permit
No. M-88-112. Abatement 8 required BMRI to conduct investigations to deuttmine if
constituents in railings materials differ from materials that were characterized prior to
operations.
In May, 1993, BIv1RI submitted a report addressing the Abatement 8 issues (and also
issues related to Abatement 10). Subsequently (October, 1993), BMRl prepared a
response to DMG and citizen comments on the May report. In the October, 1993
response document, BMRI undertook to collect and analyze five additional, decp
samples from the Iower impoundment. The flue Samples, collected from three borings
in the Iower impoundment, are as follows:
1. Drill Hole #14, ]5" - 26.5' BCS
2. Drill IIolc #l5, 35'-45' BGS
3. Drill Hole #15, 45'-55' BGS
4. Drill Hole q16. 35' - 45' BGS
5. Drill Hole # 16, 45'-55' BGS
The five additional satnpJcs were collected to test the hypotheses that the pore water is
relatively homogenous and that the geochetnical conditions of the deeper portions of the
Lower Impoundment are sufficiently similar to the characteristics identified tin pre-
operational testing that no new cond~[ions need to be applied b}~ DMG.
BMRI provided test data for the additional samples and copies of the 1993 EMRI
reports to Geochunica, Inc. (Denver, Colorado) for evaluation. This memorandum (a)
documents the results of the testing conducted on samples collected to fulfill $MRI's
Geochimica, lnc. 1 ?ti September, 1996
