California liners. The length, diameter and weight of samples were measured. The samples were then <br />dried in a low temperature oven. <br />1 <br />Gradation/Atterbergs <br />~ Gradation tests indicated the refuse ranges from silty sand to a sandy silty gravel according <br />to the Unified Soils Class cation System. The liquid limits were very consistent, ranging from 22 to <br />25 percent, as were the plasticity indices which ranged from 4 to 7 percent. Samples tested contained <br />~ 10 to 42 percent fines (particles passing the No. 200 sieve). <br />Specific Graviri <br />~ One sample was tested for specific gravity. These test results showed the material tested had <br />a specific gravity of 1.82. <br />• <br />Standard Proctor <br />We performed three standard Proctor tests on bulk samples which were obtained from test pits <br />~ during field density testing. We combined bulk samples to yield representative samples indicative of <br />the range of materials. The materials differed due to the presence of sandstone which was laid down <br />by the loaders to enable them to get around the site. <br />• We measured maximum dry densities of 94, 96 and 97 pounds per cubic toot at moisture <br />contents of 10.5, 11.5 and 10.5 percent; respectively. These densities are higher than the Proctor <br />results obtained during our previous density testing (89 pounds par cubic foot at 11.4 percent <br />~ moisture). We believe this change occurred due to the sampling method. The sample which was used <br />previously was taken from the surface of the refuse pile, whereas the samples for this report were taken <br />at depths from 1.5 feet to 9.5 feet. <br />• <br />5 <br />C <br />
