DISPOSAL ACTIVITIES
Ash Disposal
Dttring 1998, a total of 48,490 tons of mixed fly and bottom ash were
transported to and disposed of at the Keenesburg Mine site. Of this quantity,
9,215 tons were used to finish filling A-Pit which accepted a total of 244,350
tons, when completed and ready for final reclamation. The remaining amount,
39,275 tons was placed in South B-Pit, bringing the total B-Pit ash to 153,617
tons (5,667 tons in North B-Pit and 147,950 tons in Sottth B-Pit). The total
amount of ash disposed of at the Keenesburg site through tl~e end of 1998 is
397,967 tons.
The only ash accepted for disposal at the Keenesburg facility is that which
was generated by coal consumption at the Power Plant located on Coors
Brewing Company property in Golden, Colorado. Since September, 1995
this Plant leas been owned and operated by Trigen-Colorado Energy
Corporation. Under its agreement with Trigen, CEC continues to dispose of
the ash at the Keenesburg site.
• The source of steam coal supplied to fitel the Trigen owned Power Plant for
most of 1998 contented to be the Cyprus-Amax Twentymile Mine, located
near Steamboat, Colorado. This is an interun supplier, created out of the
transition, by Bowie Resources, Ltd. (Trigen's supplier) from Bowie #1 Mine
to Bowie #2 Mine. During the course of this transition, sporadic production
levels, fluchtating quality and the balancing of supply commitments led to a
decision to remain with Twentymile until approximately the middle of 1999,
at which time it is anticipated the Bowie #2 Mine will become the full-time
supplier. Throughout this transition period the Bowie mines have continued to
provide the full stoker coal requirement for Trigen (about 12% of the total
coal supply). Although not in a position to supply coal, other than a small
quantity for stoker testing, the development of the new mine is proceeding
with the anticipation of "full production by mid-1998. CEC has pursued
minor revisions addressing the ash from both the Twentymile and Bowie #2
Mines.
Ash "grab" samples were taken at the Trigen Power Plant at the end of 1998.
Samples of both fly ash and bottom ash were collected and submitted for
testing. The samples were analyzed using the Toxicity Characteristic
AIiR-1998 -91- Stipulation #24-25
