6.1.5 Monitoring Wells
Dedicated monitoring wells have been constructed to monitor four water bearing zones, the
Dissolution Surface, B-Groove, A-Groove and Perched aquifers, see Figure 5-1 for location
of monitoring wells. The four aquifers are monitored at four sites, immediately down-
gradient of mining operation, up-gradient (two locations) and remote down-gradient.
Some monitoring wells (15) were completed with nitrogen gas driven water sampler to
obtain water quality samples from a discrete zone, and bentonite/sand was utilized to
isolate the sampler from casing water. In some welts, a pressure transducer is placed 20-
• 75 feet below the water surface with water level information recorded continuously at a
surface data acquisition system (see Comprehensive Monitoring Plan for more details on
monitoring). A total of 17 wells are equipped with continuous water level measurement
transducers and data acquisition and storage systems.
Dedicated Monitoring Wells Immediately Down-Gradient
Wells utilized to establish baseline conditions were:
Well Aquifer
89-3 Perched
89-2 A-Groove
89-1 B-Groove
EX-2 Dissolution Surface
Down-gradient wells were completed in 1989, and samplers/pressure transducers installed
in February and March of 1990.
