5.3.2 Mulching
Topsoil stockpiles for cavity #1A wells (1A~H1 and 1A-5HR) were hydromulched in the
spring of 1998 with 1500-2000 Ib./acre. Area mulched was approximately .1 acres.
5.3.3 Reclamation Fencing
Four strand, barbed wire fences were constructed around the topsoil stockpiles and reserve
pits at wells 1A-4H1 and 1A-5HR in 1998. The fencing is utilized to protect reclamation
during establishment.
5.3.4 Monitoring
Per WRN's monitoring plan, reclaimed areas were sampled for herbaceous evaluation.
Mature, identifiable species normally occur in the third year of reclamation in the Piceance
Basin. Topsoil embankments were sampled in August 1998, just past the peak growth
stage.
As a result of higher than average precipitation, before and during the growing season,
production was higher than normal, with the maturity date in July. Light grazing was noted
on many of the plots due to rabbits and deer. The 1998 visual evaluation indicated seeded
perennial species were in good condition with high plant vigor. Vegetative production from
perennial grass and fortis was 1764 Ib./acre (dry weight is the standard reporting unit)
. versus 2037 in 1997, (see Table 5-3). Production from perennial grasses was above
29
