See Figure 1. The mine is a surface mine and min_Cng is conducted
with dozers and scrapers. The maximum production rate. is 1,3.00 tons per day
and the current production rate is 186,800 tons per year. Ttie production rate
varies depending on coal contracts. Most of the mined areas have been
reclaimed, .slthough there has been no bond release for any oi' the site.
As shown on Table 1 in the previous section of this rationale:, there are six
settling ponds on site, all but two of which treat storm water runoff from
reclaimed areas only. The ponds with discharge points 001 and 006 may receive
mine water on as intermittent basis. The pond with discharge: point 001 also
treats "spoils springs seeps". These seeps began to appear in early 1987 and
are apparently the result of the alteration of the geohydrology by mining and
reclamation. The spoils pile apparently provides the path of least resistance
for the local groundwater in the area directly upgradient of this pond.
Figure 2 shows the discharge point locations.
i7o coal preparation plant or washing activities take place on site. All
sanitary wastewater is directed to a county approved septic system. No
chemical additives are used on site and the potential for spills from stored
gasoline anti diesel fuel is addressed by a Materials Containment Plan. .
