OF CO<
~~' ~0~9
re ~., p DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
* ~7 1 O I ) • David H. Getches, Eeecwive Director
'~~~~" MINED LAND RECLAMATION DI\
• ~g 76 x DAVID C. SHELTO N, Director
Richartl D. Lamm
Governor
DATE: May 1, 1986
TO: Peter O'Connor
FROM: Steve Renner
RE: SPOILS PILE AQUIFER, CHIMNEY ROCK COAL
Data submitted in the 1985 Annual Hydrologic Report for 1985 indicates that
the water level in the backfilled East Pit is rising. In 1983 Depth-to-Water
in spoils Well W-16 was 103 feet. In 1984, Depth-to-Water was 94 feet. In
1985 the water level was fairly stable, this is probably due to the
configuration of the original pit. It is thought that the water level will
continue to slowly rise overtime.
Eventually, as the spoils aquifer water level rises, it is expected that
springs and/or seeps will develop along the east side of the reclaimed East
Pit. Therefore, it is rqy recommendation that mine personnel walk the east
side of the East Pit Reclamation area shortly after Stollsteimer Creek high
water has occurred. Any springs and seeps issuing from the reclaimed slopes
should be plotted on a map. An estimate of discharge should also be made at
the time of mapping. It is thought that springs and seeps will not be
observed above an elevation of 6,555 feet.
I am unable to predict when springs and/or seeps will occur, but it is also
important to note the absence of these discharges.
If I can be of further assistance, Please contact me.
cc: Mike Savage
9753E
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
