Long
Division Director
RE: Detection of Cyanide, RS-5 Sample, San Luis Project, Permit No. M-88-112
Dear. Mr. Zumwalt:
As you are aware, the Sangre De Cristo lab detected a small amount of cyanide in the
water sample collected at the RS-5 surface station on February 25, 1997. The results
show levels of 0.017 ppm total and 0.165 ppm WAD cyanide. After discussing the
possible problem with Mr. Harry Posey, Division Geochemist, and reviewing lab reports
for the last few months, the Division concluded that the reported levels of contamination
probably resulted from improperly rinsing the sample collecting equipment. Obviously,
since the rinse blank sample, collected on February 25, 1997, had a show of cyanide, the
equipment was still contaminated with cyanide when the RS-5 sample was collected.
In order to prevent future problems, BMRI must comply with surface and groundwater
collection protocol. Specific rinsing instructions are outlined in TR-06.
If you have any questions, please give me a call.
Sincerely,
~r.~(`~
wzg, ~
James Dillie'~
Environmental Protection Specialist
m:\ass\kmg\Zumwal L.J D I
