ANNUAL REPORT <br />Operator: United Companies of Mesa County <br />Operation: United/Norwood Pit <br />File Number: M-1988-037 <br />Anniversary Date: May 25, 2002 <br />The Norwood Pit has been active during the past year. Activities have included gravel mining and <br />processing, gravel product storage and gravel product sales. Processing included gravel crushing, screening <br />and gravel washing. A portable asphalt plant was on site at [he Norwood Pit during the summer of 2001. <br />Gravel mining activity occurred in the Phase 2 azea. The highwall was advanced to the east. Gravel was <br />also taken from the pit floor during the winter months. <br />Topsoil has been removed (and stockpiled) from the azea located immediately east of the active highwall. <br />Topsoil was transported to the large existing storage pile located in the Phase 2 area. <br />Subsoil was removed from the area to the east of the active highwall. In addition, subsoil was removed <br />from that part of the Phase 2 area located to the north of the active pit. This area lies between the existing <br />pit and the south boundary of the Phase 4 azea. Subsoil that was removed from both of these areas was <br />placed in a large fill [hat creates a road connecting the active pit floor with [he undisturbed areas of Phase 2 <br />and Phase 3. The road is located at the south boundary of the Phase 2 azea. The road construction was done <br />during this past winter. Additional subsoil material far construction of this road was taken from the subsoil <br />stockpile located to the east of the active pit. The total subsoil volume of this stockpile was used in the <br />cons[mction of [he new road. This new road will be moved [o the east as gravel extraction at both the <br />United Companies pit and the neighboring San Miguel County gravel pit is done. <br />A water pipeline has been installed across the floor of the pit for the use of the landowner. <br />Technical Revision 4 has been added [o the Mining and Reclamation Plans for [his permit to address a <br />number of topics that had changed from the approved Plans. <br />
