;.
C crn~us
"~ Orchard Valley
November 28, 1990
Ms, Susan McCannon
Senior Reclamation Specialist
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division
215 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203
Dear Ms. McCannon:
RE: West Ridge Waste Pile Repair Plan
Permit No. C-81-038
III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
Cyprus Orchard Valley Mine
P. O. Box 1299
Paonia, CO 81428
Phone: 303-527.4135
Fax: 303-527-2234
Y ... _.6 .. ~:~
n'^v ~ ^ ~^
J U V IJ.r~
~b II1~~ LGlld
P,~cl~ma;;on Ji~~iaion
This will serve to respond to the Division's letter of October 29,
1990 requesting an update on the status of the West Ridge Waste
Pile, along with a discussion as to the cause of the compaction
problem, location of area not meeting compaction requirements, and
how the pile is to be returned to its approved configuration.
Also, copies of nuclear gauge compaction reports since fall, 1989
were requested.
The repair plan calls for removal of the material that failed the
compaction test. In order to expose this material the overlying
lifts, approximately 30 feet, will be removed and taken to the
crushing and screening level for processing through that facility.
Also, this excavation will extend approximately 60 feet back into
the bench. After the undercompacted material has been removed the
remainder of the bench, above this repair elevation, will be pushed
in and compacted in compliance with the approved plan. This repair
procedure will allow for an area that will be ready to accommodate
additional gob as it is generated in the mine. Attached, is a plan
view of the bench and a profile showing the work that has been done
and the final configuration of the bench.
The material removed from the pile which has been hauled and then
processed through the screening and crushing facility will be
incorporated into the coal stockpile and shipped to Orchard
Valley's customers. The ability to ship this material will depend
on quality requirements established in the various contracts.
Presently, approximately 6622 cubic yards of material has been
taken from the pile and stockpiled at the screening and crushing
facility. It is Orchard Valley's opinion that this is most
effective manner for addressing removal of this material,
