Annual Report -Construction Materials Operation
Yule Quarry
Permit Number M-1999-058
Sierra Minerals Corporation -August 2003
RECEIVEd
au~ ~ s zoos
Division ~f Minerals and Geology
(al Reclamation Accomalished to Date: Sierra Minerals Corporation (Sierra) established a
test plot on the property in 2002. The purpose of the test plot is to determine if it will be feasible
to use existing marble fines for topsoil as opposed to transporting topsoil from offsite. Soil
samples were taken of the marble fines on the waste pile and sent to Colorado State University
for analysis. CSU recommended a specific fertilizer (40 lbs. N, 60 lbs. PzOs, and 601bs. Kz0 per
acre) that should be added to the mazble fines to encourage the growth of the native vegetation
seed mix as required in Sierra's Reclamation Plan. Fertilizer and the seed mix were purchased
from the COOP in Carbondale
and a 10 foot square test plot
was established in early June
of 2002. Due to an
exceptionally dry year, the
plot was watered weekly until
afternoon thunderstorms
began in July of 2002. The
seed mix produced short
grasses in 2002. No action
was taken on the test plot in
2003, other than to allow the
grasses to grow naturally. The
photo at right shows growth as
of August of 2003. Sierra will
continue to monitor the test
plot into 2004. No other
reclamation activities were
performed within the Affected
Area to date.
New Disturbances Anticiaated During the Uacomina Year: Sierra anticipates the
dumping of no more than 10,000 tons of waste rock on the waste pile during the coming year.
This dumping will occur in the more southern areas of the waste pile. The Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology is planning to use bond money posted by the prior operator, Colorado
Yule Marble Company (CYMC), to repair off-site damage caused by CYMC during its
operation. This damage is in an azea at the northern end of the waste pile. Sierra has committed
to no dumping of waste blocks of marble on the waste pile in areas that might impact the
northern end of the waste pile until the damage is repaired.
