Spring and Summer Water Report
2002 ~~C~/ ~~~
A ez #2 Mine ACT ? 4 ?G-~2
p ~iYisian o1 Minerals and GeolagY
Permit C-S1-011
Surface Water
As in previous years, the single sediment pond for the entire disturbed azea did not
dischazge; it only contained water in the spring as a result of snowmelt. All disturbed
area is channeled into the sediment pond except for a small exemption azea of less than
0.1 acre located at the reclaimed office area. The sediment pond discharge is permitted
with the Colorado Department of Health as NPDES Permit #COG-850041. (The permit
was formerly CO-0036668). Quarterly DMR forms are attached for the 15t 2"a and 3rd
quarters of 2002. Quarterly sediment pond inspections revealed no problems with
functionality of the pond. Three inspections aze attached.
Trout Creek, the perennial stream located adjacent to the reclaimed yard area, was
tested quarterly for pH, Specific conductance, temperature and flow. The sample
location was moved to immediately downstream of the reclaimed area in 1997. The data
for the 1~` quarter 2002 showed normal conditions, with normal flows in Trout Creek.
The water has historically been of good quality and compares favorably to the baseline
analysis included in the permit. Iron, zinc and arsenic are in low concentration. The
summer levels showed drought conditions as the entire Colorado experienced its worst
overall drought since the 1700's. Trout Creek was not as affected as some areas of
Colorado. Ph levels are always good (7.8-8.2) and total dissolved solids of the stream is
170 ppm. The water was sampled on July 29 of 2002. The attached results show no
signs of water quality changes from previous years. Overall, the water quality is good.
All portal seals are intact and do not show any signs of seepage or other problems. The
mine or its reclamation has not had any adverse effect on the prevailing hydrologic
balance. The diversion ditch above the minesite along the residential access road
requires cleaning as does the culvert crossing of this diversion under the Trout Creek
Road.
a.
