field data collected during 2002. Well SM-9 was undermined by Panel C during 1993 but showed no apparent impacts
in the field data collected during 2002. No anomalous water quality observations were apparent during 2002 at the
Steven's Gulch shallow groundwater monitoring wells.
Surface Water Monitoring Stations -SPRINGS
East Roatcop Creek -Two springs were monitored m the East Roatcop Creek drainage (refer to Table 1 and Map No.
4-1) during 2002. Spring 30 had sufficient water for field parameters but no flow in April and found dry during the
remainder of the year. Spring 30 was first undermined in April,1983. Spring ]0-]0 was found dry in April, June,
September and December, therefore, no laboratory analysis is available. Spring 10-] 0 was encompassed by the angle-
of-draw of Panel Y during October, 1993. Subsidence impacts were not apparent at either of these locations during
2002.
West Roatcop Creek -Four springs were monitored in the West Roatcop Creek drainage (refer to Table 1 and Map No.
4-1) during 2002. Spring 31 was monitored on a monthly basis and exhibited less than average flows throughout the
year with the flow tapering off in the fall. Water quality parameters were consistent with ranges previously established
for this site. No mining occurred within the watershed for this spring in 2002 and no mining impacts were evident.
Spring 32 was monitored monthly. Spring 32 exhibited flow throughout the yeaz with the flow tapering off in the fall
and winter. Water quality parameters were consistent with last year's sampling. Spring 10-13 was monitored quarterly.
Flows, as a result of a seemingly dry yeaz, were non-existent and field parameters observed at this site. No mining
occurred during 2002 in the Spring ] 0-13 watershed. Spring 14-4 was monitored quarterly. Flows and field parameters
observed at this site were well below average when compared with previous values. No mining occurred during 2002
in the Spring 14-4 watershed.
Steven's Gulch -One spring was monitored within the Steven's Gulch drainage (refer to Table 1 and Map No. 4-1) in
2002. Spring 25 lies below an area of the East mine inactive since 1982. This site had no measurable flows in April,
September and November. Spring 25 has been identified as an adjudicated water right within the permit area.
Two springs with ponds in the Stevens Gulch drainage, Spring and Pond 13-5, Spring and Pond 13-6 were monitored
quarterly in 2002. Spring and Pond 13-5 was undermined during the last half of 1992. Spring and Pond 13-6 was
undermined during the end of 1988. Neither Spring 13-5 nor Spring 13-6 had any measurable flow throughout the year.
Terror Creek -Seven springs or springs with ponds are found within the Terror Creek drainage (refer to Table 1 and
Map No. 4-1) were monitored during 2002. Spring and Pond 17 is outside the anticipated extent of mining activity.
Spring and Pond 20 and Spring and Pond 7-1 were undermined during the Eas[ Pod development, panels EP-3 and EP-4.
Al] four springs have extensive data collected to characterize the typical hydrology at these sites. However, these
locations were identified and targeted by the Division as adjudicated water rights within the permit area. No adverse
mine related impacts or other irregularities were noted at any of these Terror Creek Springs.
Surface Water Monitoring Stations: STREAMS AND DITCHES
Monitoring of surface water stations during 2002 was concentrated in the Stevens Gulch and East Roatcop Creek azeas
as these drainages had seen recent mining activity and were projected for further activity during the current permit term.
Overall, adverse impacts attributable to mining were not evident at any of the monitored surface water stations (refer
to Table 1 and Map No. 4-1). Stations SW-5 (Stevens Gulch), SW-6 (East Roatcop Creek), and SW-10 (Terror Ditch),
exhibited below average flows and water quality parameters consistent with previous years data. No evidence of
subsidence impacts in these drainages was apparent. Mining occurred in [he Stevens Gulch drainage upstream of site
SW-5 during 1993 in Panel C. Panel C mining was designed and conducted to prevent the development of subsidence
to protect the waterway and certain structures in the vicinity. Data collected during 2002 shows these protective
measures were successful.
Surface Water Monitoring Stations: SMALL AREA EXEMPTIONS
The east mine fan level was defined as a small area exemption since drainage from this area (refer to Map 8-1) is not
conveyed to a sediment pond. Three sample points were defined at this location and sampled for conformance with the
NPDES discharge alternative limitations requirements associated with discharges occurring because of precipitation
events of less than the ] 0-year and 24-hour magnitude. In these instances, settable solids and pH limitation must be met.
z
