' of the analytical results presented herein, .or perhaps additional analysis
for more specific site conditions and dump configuration.
' B. AUTHORIZATION
' The analyses and testing discussed herein were conducted as part of the
overall program of site investigation and mine development for the Red
Wing Mine project. This part of W, A. Wahler and Associates' work on
' the project is being carried out pursuant to Agreement No. 832 (dated
April 7, 1975), with the Colowyo Coal Company of Denver, Colorado, for
furnishing consulting engineering services.
C. PURPOSE AND SCOPE
' The purpose of the work covered in this report was to: a) recover samples
' in and determine the properties of the foundation materials underlying
the waste dump; b) evaluate the stability of the waste dump for various
combinations of slope angle and embankment height and; c) evaluate the
' stability of the spoil bank with a dragline operating near its crest.
Specifically, this work consisted of the following tasks:
' 1) Field investigation program consisting of seven exploratory soil
' borings, and recovery of undisturbed Shelby tube samples, and
bag samples of the foundation soils.
' 2) Laboratory testing program to evaluate engineering properties of
the foundation soils.
3) Analysis of field and laboratory test results, and the selection
' of engineering properties of both the foundation soils, and the
waste dump materials.
' 4} Analysis of the stability of the waste dump for various combinations
of slope angle, embankment height, and foundation inclination,
using static and "pseudo-static" types of analyses.
1

' O ~ O~fILCfI Project 0823 I-2
