Operations will continue in the 2003 permit year with mining of at least an additional
1.25 acres, and stripping of up to 3 additional acres, as reported in our last annual
report. Stripping has run ahead of mining because of a need to have larger stockpile
areas, and our desire to protect the topsoil as much as possible. We have applied to
CDWR for an additional year's implementation of the SWSP; increased precipitation in
the past few months will aid both our operations and the entire area. Although we did
not get adequate moisture last fall to reseed the berms and seed the area impacted by
highway construction, we expect to be able to seed those areas this year.
Based on expected demand, most work originally planned for 2002 will instead be
performed in 2003. In addition to stripping a larger area (but still less than originally
planned for 2002 and not more than shown in our previous annual report as proposed
for 2003), the anticipated plant location has been shifted slightly (as shown on the map)
to allow for better organization of the product stockpile area and better traffic flow. We
have continued to keep the Montezuma County Commissioners aware of this situation.
Although more ground water will be exposed during this season than in 2002, we will
continue to conserve water and minimize both evaporation and consumption. Again,
this is as discussed in our letter last August.
If there are any questions, please call me at (970) 565-3388, or contact our
environmental engineer, Nathan Barton, at (970) 564-1380.
Si rely,
Aryol Bru ley
Manager
Four States Aggregates LLC
CF:
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
Durango Office
701 Camino del Rio
Durango, CO 81301
VIA FAX 970-237-5104
