Introduction
•
The information assembled in this 1987 Annual Hydrologic Report includes data collected
from approved monitoring sites established at Peabody Coal Company's Nuc1a Mine (Permit
No. C-81-008). In addition, hydrologic baseline data collected from monitoring sites
established at Peabody's proposed Nucla East mining area are presented. Surface water
information assembled include instantaneous and mean daily discharge measurements, NPDES
discharge monitoring reports, water quality analysis results and water quality statistics
reports. Presented ground water information include monthly water level measurements,
well completion specifications, water quality analysis results and water quality
statistics reports. A revised monitoring site map encompassing both the Nucla Mine and
Nucla East mining areas accompanies this report.
Reported surface and ground water information collected at monitoring sites associated
with Peabody's Nucla Mine encompass the 1987 water year (October 1, 1986 through September
30, 1987), with the exception of ground water level data and Hater quality statistics
reports. These exceptions include all historical data for Nucla monitoring sites.
Surface and ground water information reported for monitoring sites established in
Peabody's Nucla East area include data collected from July of 1986 through September of
1987 (Baseline Hydrologic Monitoring).
The following sections present discussion about monitoring activities conducted during the
1987 water year as part of the operational monitoring program approved for Peabody's Nucla
Mine. Minor modifications of this program (i .e., construction of spoils wells) and
results of special monitoring (i.e., analysis for silver and chromium) are also included.
An update of monitoring activities performed at baseline monitoring sites established at
Peabody's Nucla East area is also provided.
Finally, upon perusal of this report it will be evident that little to no interpretation
of data is included. Interpretation and discussion of the data presented in this report
will be included in the Hydrologic Description, Hydrologic Monitoring Program, and
Probable Hydrologic Consequences sections of the Nucla East Permit Application Package,
which is expected to be submitted to CMLRD by March 31, 1987. Future Annual Hydrologic
Reports for Nucla and Nucla East will include monitoring data discussion and
. interpretation for both mining areas in a similar combined report format.
1
