<br />Spcrrnophilus richardsorii <br />Spcrsnophilus tridecemZineatus <br />Spcrmophilus spilosoma <br />Sperrophilus variegatus <br />Svarmo~hilus l~t~ralia <br />C~rorrrgs Zudovicianus <br />Sciurus ai~erti <br />Sciurus niger <br />Ta~riasciurus hudsonicus <br />'' <br />Richardson's Ground Squirrel <br />Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel <br />Spotted Ground Squirrel <br />Rock Squirrel <br />Golden~wantlod Ground squirrel <br />Black-tailed Prairie Dog <br />Abert's :squirrel <br />Fox :squirrel <br />Ck.ickaree <br />Although these 13 species of squirrel have been recorded from Eoulder <br />County, it is doubtful whether more than 3 or 4 species presently occur <br />on the Hennigh and,Ziegle properties; only 2 species were seen during <br />field studies; Fox Squirrels are common in riparian cottonwoods along <br />tha St. Vrain River, and along ditches; they probably feed on walnuts <br />and grain around the homesteads, especially the Hennigh homestead; one <br />Rock Squirrel was seen beside the St. Vrain River, on the Weng property, <br />north of Ziegle's; because of a combination of altitude and hab:Ctat <br />conditions, it is doubtful whether the Uinta Chipmunk, Richardson's <br />Ground Squirrel, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel, Abert's Squirrel and <br />Chickaree would now be expected to occur, even occasionally, on the <br />Hennigh and Ziegle properties; habitat is unfavorable for the SF~otted <br />Ground Squirrel, cvhich occurs in sandy areas to the east; each cf the <br />rc;naining five squirrels, Least and Colorado Chipmunks, Yellow-bellied <br />ttcrmot, Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel, and Black-tailed Prairie Dog, <br />coup occur on the study area, but time at which field studies were done <br />nrecludcd the likelihood of their being observed; no prairie dog sign was I <br />noted; habitat conditions arc generally poor for these last five species. , <br />
