_i
::rs. Allc~ra Collister, of,Lonomont, has reported to us o~serva-
t;~i:s of a nu;.iber of regionally unusual species of birds which she has
o~s~rvcd in the general area including the Hennigh and Ziegle properties,
a-.or.~ them the Calliope Hummingbird, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher,
C:.rolina F.rer., and Painted Redstart. She considers the site to be
wit:~in an important north-south flyway for migrants, bordering as it
does, the plains and the foothills.
The St. Vrain River, in its course past the properties, affords an
unusually good habitat for dippers in winter.
The cell established riparian community of the study area affords
a very pleasing variety of birds in winter. In any one day, Gr.at
:'orncd Ocals, Belted Kingfishers, Townsend's Solitaires, and Ki1.Ldeers
are liable to be seen, along with a dozen or so more dependable and
aides?read species.
This study area appears to be located within an important c•~inter
ha~itat for Canada Geese. Although its precise role has not been
evaluated, it does not appear to be critical, as there is relatively
r..ore goose activity on other nearby properties.
Certain processes are already in progress which can be expected
to ir.i].uence both the variety of birds to be seen, and the average
nu:.:bers of most birds seen, on the Ilennigh and Ziegle properties.
Among these processes are:
(1) gross modification of habitats associated with limeston•a
quarrying to the west;
(2) c.idcning of State Ili~inaay u5 to the north, and on-going
channclization of the St, Vrain River to the north;
