~ III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ~~
STATE OF ~OLORADO
Roy Romer, Govei
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Dtractor
July 13, 1989
Mr. Rick Hughes
Colorado Yampa Coal Company
29587 Routt Co. Rd. No. 27
Oak Creek, Colorado 80467
RE: Review - Annual Hydrology Report (1488) - Mine No. 3 - C-84-062
Dear Mr. Hughes:
We have completed our review of the water year 1987 to 1988 Annual Hydrology
Report for Mine No. 3. Some minor sampling omissions occurred and they are
listed below. In general, the missed analyses are not considered to be
significant; however, future monitoring should be conducted so that all
required analyses are completed.
The provided summary regarding water quality impacts is adequate at this
time. The data indicate increasing total dissolved solids and electrical
conductivity on Foidel and Middle Creeks. This possible trend will be
analyzed in more detail in conjunction with the Mine No. 3 renewal process.
Data Omissions
Spcil Springs -
As discussed during our telephone conversation of July 11, 1989, it
appears that the spring located below the Homestead Ditch at Mine 3 South
was missed during the 1988 Spring survey. The spring was flowing (less
than 35 g.p.m.) during July of 1989, and both CMLRD and CYCC collected a
sample. It is our understanding that the CYCC results will be submitted,
and that future surveys will include this spring if it is flowing at the
time of the survey.
Surface Sites -
Site 900 - Bicarbonate was not reported for the February, April or July
1988 analyses.
Site 700 - Bicarbonate was not reported for the February 1988 analysis.
- A value for total suspended solids was not reported for
the April 1988 analysis.
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
