Mining is proceeding eastward into the previously
stripped land but little new land has been stripped on the east and south sides of the pit. Operations in the
current phase of the plan is very nearly at its conclusion. Future operations will likely begin in the second
phase which is located on the extreme south end of the site.
Annual Report Maps: The enclosed maps show the primary areas of disturbance and the type of
disturbance occurring in each area. The current maps reflect an updated portrayal of the operation zones as
based upon aerial photography taken before the preparation of the annual report. The reports are also being
prepared with the aid of GPS to locate key boundaries of disturbances.
Affected Lands: The amount of affected land has increased very little in the last year. The same processes
of operating the pit are being used as has been used in the past. This operation is quite similar to the way it
was last year, although very slightly larger. There was also a continued extension of the conveyor so the plant
does not need to be moved. A backup water line is being installed to connect to the City of Fountain water
line. Due to the severe drought, the normal water supply for the washing operations has been temporarily
lost. The City of Fountain is willing to sell some water for the washing operations. This line is being installed
into a trench that will be backfilled and revegetated when it is completed.
Revegetation: The site is stable and is not subject to erosion. No additional revegetation was done in the
last year. Topsoil has been stockpiled around the north edge in preparation for final topsoiling of the slope
south of the stockpiles.
Expected Activity (2003): Mining will continue for some period in the current operational areas. But as
that phase is limited with regard to suitable material for the future and because of lease and contract
requirements and deadlines, mining will likely begin on the south end of the deposit and move northward.
Eventually, the mining on the south end and the north end will join.
Because this shift will probably reduce the need to have so much land disturbed in the northern
sections, it is likely that more reclamation will be implemented in those areas that are no longer used in the
northern portions of the operation. Because overburden from the southern area will be used for reclamation
there and little more overburden will be removed from the northern areas, reclamation of the overburden
disposal areas in the northern part of the operation can be started. Fully reclaimed land in the northeastern
part of the site is also being considered for request of release from bond.
Bonding: This operation is covered by a self bond.
Schmidt Construction Company 2002 Annual Report M-1982-155 Fountain Pit Page 1 of 1
